Hospital Run

Jon and I were at the hospital this morning....but not to have a baby. No, we weren't there for me at all- we were there for Jonathan. Yesterday when I saw him at work he told me he had gotten another bite on his arm (he's had 2 other large bites since we moved into our new apt.). He showed it to me yesterday and even then it looked quite large. Well, this morning he wakes me up at about 6:40 am and seems genuinely concerned about it which of course makes me worried. By this morning his bite which started off the size of a silver dollar has tripled in size, it's swollen, painful, and feels tight. We called his uncle who is a doctor and he tells us to trace the swollen area with a pen (to see if the infected area gets larger) and to go to the E.R. So we head to the hospital- which happens to be the one I will be delivering at in hopefully 7 or less days. We figured we might as well time the drive and it looks like we can make it there in about 15 minutes- and that is if we have to go during the morning traffic jam. OK, so after about 3 hours in the ER and going through the long process of seeing this person and that person we finally have a diagnosis and are discharged. Jonathan has cellulitis (a bacterial infection of the skin) and has been put on 2 oral antibiotics + he had a drip while at the hospital. Hopefully the oral pills will be enough to take care of the problem. If the infected area gets bigger he'll have to go back and be put on an IV. If he does end up going back I better get to be in a bed next to him having a baby!
I thought I would be the one in a hospital bed at this time...

  4. How terrible! Before I wrote this comment I read up on cellulitis just to see what in the world it is, and was THANKFUL to read that it is not contagious. While reading your blog I kept thinking, my goodness I hope its not contagious. Poor Jon, what a miserable time to get this skin infection, and I REALLY hope it doesnt spread more!!! While reading the article I learned that people who have diabetes, people who are receiving chemo and people who have a very low immune system (like Aids/HIV) have a high threshold of getting this but Jon has nothing of the sort. My goodness Jon, I am so sorry you have to experience this infection...
Now come on Rowan lets see you buddy!!!

  5. Wow...the pictures make the infection look HUGE! Hopefully it's not too painful. When I saw the title I thought that you would say you had a false alarm. I had one of those...it sucks because you get all excited and pumped up, and then you just have to go home.

  6. Oh mother of all things holy! Was that the effect of a nasty 8legged monstrosity?! Proof and validation of all my wildest fears right there. HOpe he feels better soon. And hope you're the next on in the hospital! :)

  7. Yikes! So sorry. Hope it gets better soon. Reminds me of how my limbs look if I have a reaction to an insect bite. Gets pretty swollen and sore. Luckily I haven't had one do that since I was a teenager, thank goodness. But every time I get I bite I hope it doesn't swell up. (So I'm very leery of bees, mosquitos and basically all insects)

  8. I am sooo sorry for you both. There must be a reason this happened, and it was probably so you could see how long it takes you to get to the hospital. Now you know, so Rowan can go ahead and make his appearance!
