Little Buggers!

Jonathan and I have been infested with ants! Never have we had a problem with ants in the 8 months we have been in this apartment....that is until yesterday. I woke up & went into the bathroom and noticed some ants. I think, "That's gross," clean them up and go about my day. I run some errands, come home, and notice quite a few more in the kitchen. Again, I think, "Gross," and go about cleaning those ones up. I put some food in Mile's dog dish and go to the bedroom to read. After a short while I come out and there is a trail of ants leading to his dish- the food, dish, and floor are covered! I clean those ones up and rush to the store for some Raid. I spray all areas and it looks like I have taken care of the problem- I don't see anymore ants the rest of the night. Well, just yesterday I bought Miles a 31 lb bag of dog food- yes, 31 pounds! $20 bucks on dog food. (A good brand too cause Miles is spoiled and a picky eater) I put the bag in our laundry closet- where we have kept all his bags of dog food since we moved here. This morning I wake up and go to get him a cup of food. I reach into the bag, dip the cup, pull it out, and that is when I realize the bag, the food in the bag, and the area around it is COVERED in ants. And now my hand and the cup of food I am holding is covered as well. AHHHHHH!!!!!!! I run to the kitchen to dispose of the cup and wash my hand- being bit all the way. Then I go back to survey the problem- not good. They are everywhere. His 31 lb bag of food is swimming in ants. I grab the bag and take it outside to the porch- once again my hand and arm get covered in ants. I head back inside, whip out my Raid, and go to town in the laundry room. It's a war zone. Then as ants lay dying in a puddle of Raid I sit down at the computer to email our management office. I called them yesterday to tell them of my minor (it seemed minor at the time) ant problem and she says she will have a guy come spray NEXT Wednesday. Well, today the problem has gone from minor to extreme. I tell her that I cannot wait til NEXT Wednesday-the problem has to be fixed NOW. I also attempted to get new carpet (it seemed that is where they were coming from) and a new bag of dog food. So I get a call from her this afternoon and she asks if she can send a maintenance man over- YES!! So Jim, dear man, comes over to investigate. Of course they aren't going to replace the carpet but they will shampoo it for free. Other then that he just said, "Ants come for food and when the food has been taken away they will go away." Uh, excuse me, we aren't slobs here. I do clean and vacuum. So really all I got for my troubles was a free carpet shampoo. So today I get to super clean to make sure the stinkers stay away. Fun for me since getting down on the ground is so easy with this bump. Hopefully the problem goes away just as quickly as it arrived.

  1. Yuck! We've had some minor ant problems as well. I usually vacuum them up, and then they come back in one hour. I've found leaving ant traps around takes care of it pretty quickly. Good luck!

  2. I HAAAAAAAAAATE ANTS.

That "when the food is gone" thing is BS. It can never be gone, because you have to keep *some* in your apt, at least! I mean, even dirty dishes that have been rinsed clean & put in the dishwasher (but aren't ready to run a full load) can attract them, depending on how avidly they're scouting. And they're always coming *back* scouting, anyway.

We had really bad ants right after we had Kiddo - once the ant-killer guys treated the outside (and probably killed the colony), it was fine, but they swarmed over his bottle stuff, too - it was NASTY. I had to keep re-washing things in hot, HOT soapy water, (so much for sleeping when the baby sleeps!!!) and they'd still come. We don't have many anymore, (gee - death seems to eliminate them pretty effectively! ;-), even though I'm not quite as anal - I mean, "conscientious" - about food on the counter, LOL.

But Windex and dish soap kill 'em, too, and if you can find where they're coming from (like a crevice), and spray that, (we found Orange Windex worked okay), sometimes you can keep them from establishing a trail. OH, and squish 'em.

    Good luck!!!

  3. I'm sorry about your ant problem. We've had ants every year living in Tennessee so I totally understand. The little ant traps never worked for us and no matter how clean you are, they will find something. We even had them in our dishwasher one year (don't get me started!) We have to put all of our powdered sugar, brown sugar bags in tupperwear, put syrup in fridge, put honey on top of the fridge, etc. It's a major problem out here for a lot of people. What we have found works pretty well it Combat gel. WE got it from home depot and you have to make sure the ants actually get to it and take it back to the colony- thus killing the queen. But don't let Miles get to it (not good for animals!) Otherwise, talk to your apartment complex owners and have someone come spray for you. Good luck! I feel for you.

  5. HEATHER...I am so sorry for your tenants. Not to try and steal your thunder, but Chris and I wanted to share our pain with you. Though it's NOT with ants. Roaches.... and tons of them!!!! It's not our fault, Every other month, the leasing office sends the Bug People in to "de-bug" the place. It's in the contract. Anywho... regardless of the stuff they spray... In the morning, in the afternoon and in the middle of the night, you can count AT LEAST!! 5-6 of those critters in the kitchen on our walls and everywhere else you can think of. And we're pretty clean! Can you believe we find them in the dishwasher too! This is after it has run it's cycle. It's sad. So basically... we feel your pain. Hope yours gets resolved soon.

  6. Sorry about the ants! That's not fun at all. I was the one that asked you about your pages and where you design them to look so cute! Hope little baby boy Larson is doing well. :)

  7. Yeah, ants suck and I hope you get rid of them soon but I have to say the roaches are the worst! I really feel for Chris and Princess. I dealt with roaches in Alabama and let me tell you, when you wake up from a good nights sllep, open your eyes and are staring at a big ole cock roack sitting on your pillow 6 inches from your face....that's the worst!

  8. sick sick sick! I HATE bugs in my house!!! Ewwww. I would have been like you and could not have waited a week for the guy, and you better have gotten a free carpet clean because the house isnt yours. Its like the management was "doing you a favor". Good thing the cleaner guy told you that once the "food is gone" the ants will be gone too. Yea, thanks for that "really mature" advice dude.
My brother-in-laws and soon to be ex-sis-in-law's house had mice because they OFTEn had a MESSY house. AAAAAAAHHHHH SICK.
