I didn't even know virtual 1/2 marathons existed, but apparently they do, and after running one today, I think I know why I haven't heard of them before. They're awful! It's over-hallelujah. There were many aspects that made this a not-so-fun run. Running alone for 13.1 miles. (Yes, I could have stayed with Carol, but I did want to beat my last time by just a smidge, so I started off strong, but by mile 10 I knew that wasn't going to happen. BUT I knew I could still beat my 1st 1/2 time. I did- but not by much.) Hills stink, but flat and straight isn't so awesome either. Of course I missed the bells and whistles that come with a regular 1/2- the people, the finish line, the official time chip, the aid stations, the medal placed around your neck when you cross the finish, etc.
I have never been so happy to be done with a race. 2:22:25 minutes later after 13.1 very long miles. I have never had to talk to myself so much in my head to get me to finish! (I think this is a pretty accurate time. At one point I had to stop my watch while I figured out if I could continue on the path- it was dirt and there were men working on it. I started my watch right away as soon as I got back on track. Again, another frustration that comes with a virtual half! Having to stop and find your way back to the trail because of "roadwork.") I finished, met up with Jon and the boys, and as soon as we saw Carol coming in, I ran back to run it in with her (and Rowan joined us). Jon and Craig were both there at the end, which is funny because this was the most lackluster 1/2 we've done, and it's the first one they've seen us finish. They better be at the Ogden half finish line!
This was the Saints and Sinners 1/2 so we brought along our attire to get proper pictures at the end. Part of this whole virtual run was sending in a pic with your finish time, so we wanted to work it. I totally lucked out and scored my gear at Michael's for 80% off shortly after Halloween.
Even though it was a rough run, the package that was waiting for me in the mailbox when I got home made it worth it (almost). More shirts and bling- yeah baby! Maybe if I sleep in my shirt and medal I will forget about how miserable I was the last 3 miles of this 1/2 and be brave enough to sign up for the Thankful 13 half. I don't know, I am not sure how much I like running on a straight flat path- which is what I would be doing with the Thankful 13. This might just have been the last 1/2 for 2013. It's been a fun little hobby to do the past couple months, and I have enjoyed the "me time," but all good things must come to and end- at least until winter ends. Course I will keep running on my treadmill in the warmth of my home. Come spring (or whenever it's warms up) it'll be back to long runs outside to get ready for the Ogden 1/2!

Way to go Heather!!! I'm still not quite sure what a virtual run is. You will have to explain this to me. Good for you though! Keep up the good work!!
